How Technology is Changing the Recruiting Landscape

How Technology is Changing the Recruiting LandscapeHow Technology is Changing the Recruiting LandscapeHow Technology is Changing the Recruiting Landscape Rossheim, Senior Contributing WriterWhile the principles of a well-written job postingremain relatively constant, recruiting technology is rapidly changing their distribution model. With that rapid evolution, recruiters who arent paying attention run the risk falling far behind, and quickly. The sourcing piece has changed tremendously with online developments, says Irina Shamaeva, a partner with Brain Gain Recruiting. Recruiters who understand online sourcing are ahead of the competition. What key changes are driving online sourcing and recruiting as we enter the second decade of the 21st century? Heres a rundown of some key developments and recruiting strategies.Targeted Advertising Boosts Job PostingsOne recent innovation in online recruitment is the use of syndicated display advertising technologies (on-line media) to put job posti ngs in front of more job candidates. These advertisements are generated dynamically and automatically distributed to a targeted audience across many web sites.Behavioral target networks use cookie-based targeting to look at behaviors that demonstrate an interest in a particular career, says Joran Lawrence, senior product manager for Career Ad Network (CAN),which collects this anonymous data.ur customers want to address a select audience, says Lawrence. If they post a nursing job, they dont need to get in front of all of the68 Million Americans that Career Ad Network reaches, but just those people in the targeted region who have an interest in nursing. The ad is presented to relevant seekers on whatever website theyre on, from thematically related sites like Salary.com to geographically-oriented sites like Yellowpages.com.This targeted advertising extends the reach of the job posting and can lure candidates who arent actively looking for an open position on a job board. Rather than in vesting substantial time and money to plan an advertising campaign, design ads, and buy media, the employer simply signs up to have the targeted ad generated from their job opening.Behaviorally-targeted ads have proven effective in increasing views of job postings. Career Ad Networkon averageincreases views of linked job postings by 40 percent to 100 percent for an ad that runs for 30 days. What does the future hold for targeted advertising as a recruiting tool? As we use semantic search to aid job seekers, we will use ontology categorization to make career advertising more powerful, Lawrence says.Reaching Mobile-Savvy Candidates Another development in job posting distribution is the adoption of mobile phones to access the Internet, including the explosion of Apple and Android devices that now offer reasonably-priced 3G data. These devices are driving behavioral changes in todays ever-connected workforce. Catering to this mobile audience is another way to extend the reach of job posti ngs for recruiters looking to source candidates in the prime of their careers.Job searching is very transactional, says Vasu Nagalingam, senior product director for Consumer at Monster. Job seekers typically visit job boards at frequent intervals for new jobs. The mobile-savvy audience is discovering their mobile phone to be the perfect channel for this type of behavior. Nagalingam sees Internet-connected mobile devices as changing seeker behavior. Supporting these changes is critical to maintaining a healthy candidate pipeline.created its job-seeking app for Apples iPhone and the iPodtouch to help employers reach these savvy candidates. The emerging workforce is a popular group of mobile Internet users, says Nagalingam. Employers who want to target this emergent workforce should review their recruitment plans and incorporate mobile recruitment strategies to increase their recruiting efficiency. Why Search Engines are often FickleWhile dedicated recruitment tools continue to advance, some recruiters still attempt to harness the ever-advancing power of general-purpose search engines to source candidates from every corner of the Internet. But theres a catch. The sophistication of these search engines, the enormous knowledge base behind them, as well as the constantly changing rules of ranking among search engines all complicate their use for niche applications such as the recruitment process.General search engines remain difficult for recruiters, because theyre afraid of syntax, says Shamaeva. Search-engine syntax is kind of like English but you have to understand search-engine software, which uses very complex algorithms. It feels overwhelming for many recruiters.Even as most of the general-purpose search engines of the early 2000s fall by the wayside, the winning survivors all have their limitations for recruiters. Bing is poorly documented, and Google is now blocking the majority of advanced searches, because it thinks youre a robot, says Shamaeva.Meanwhile, p ioneering semantic search technologies like Power Resume Search promise to ease sophisticated searches of resume databases. Its time for recruiters to abflug incorporating the new semantic search tools into their strategies, Shamaeva says.Meeting Candidates Wherever They Are, OnlineAs professionals spend ever more time with more web resources, many employers are applying a convergence model of online sourcing that brings together many Internet genres, from social mediato job boards. Candidates especially members of the millennial generation expect to find out about opportunities at a given employer, anywhere they happen to be on the web.You have to appeal to all those students who are trying to figure out how to stand out in a competitive market, says Holly Paul, US recruiting leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Candidates have told us they want us to be on Facebook, and to provide an individual to contact. And those candidates have particular expectations about the performance of job -search media, regardless of the platform. They assume information will be kept current, for example. Firms wanting to reach mobile candidates will have to update them frequently on the status of their job applications, because thats the persona of the mobile user, says Nagalingam.

What to Do If You Cant Answer an Interview Question

What to Do If You Cant Answer an Interview QuestionWhat to Do If You Cant Answer an Interview QuestionThe thought of bedrngnis being able to answer an interview question is a scary one for many job applicants. It happens more often than you might think. Sometimes, you dont know the answer. In other cases, you may know, but your brain freezes at the moment. Or, interviewers may deliberately try to stump you to reveal how youll respond to challenging questions. Being prepared for elend being able to respond can help alleviate some of the anxiety and help you make the most out of a difficult situation. Dont Panic Your mindset going into an interview is a critical ingredient for success. Many candidates assume that they must have a near perfect interview to land the job. In reality, it helps to recognize that other interviewees will also have difficulty answering all the questions to the complete satisfaction of the recruiter. Often, a solid but imperfect interview is sufficient to m ove you on to the next step in the screening process. This realization can help stop you from panicking if you cant answer a question well. Take the time to review the mostcommon interview questionsemployers ask so you will have an idea of what to expect. Stay Calm Your reaction if you cant immediately come up with an answer can be more important than the ability to deliver the answer. Dont stress out. Maintaining a calm, confident posture when confronted with a tough question will help convince the recruiter that your inability to answer a question is an unusual occurrence for you. If you fall apart and get upset, the interviewer may lose confidence in you. Consider saying something like Thats a very interesting question can I take some time to consider it and get back to you later? or Great question, I can answer it in part but would like to consider it further and get back to you. Buy Some Time You can often buy some time to formulate an answer by rephrasing the question or asking for clarification. For example, you might say Are you looking for an example of how I motivated an underperforming colleague in a team situation? By the time the interviewer answers, something may have come to mind. Or, you can also say, That question is a bit of a stumper Can I think about it, and come back to it at the end of our conversation? Its possible the interviewer will forget to ask it again, and that will allow you to follow up in your thank you note. Try to Clarify Maybe you did not understand the question. In that situation, try to identify what you found confusing. Was it just one term or word? Ask the interviewer to define it. Or, you can say, Im not sure I understand what youre asking. Can you explain more? Dont Fake It It can feel embarrassing not to be able to answer a question. But inventing something that might not make sense is worse than politely and briefly stating that you do not know the answer. If you are truly perplexed by the question an d do not think buying time, defining terms, or asking the interviewer to rephrase the question will help, say you are not sure. You can try to spin this to be more positive by saying that youll be thinking about this question after the interview, or that youll do some research, or even that you hope to learn more about the topic if hired. If you give that last response, it can be helpful to relate another time you were unfamiliar with a concept and were then able to master it. Thatll make you look resourceful. Answer When You Follow Up Perhaps the most significant thing you could do if a key question has stumped you is to research a strong answer after the interview. You can then include that answer as part of yourfollow-up communication. Very few jobs require workers to have all the answers on the spot. Demonstrating that you will be persistent, hard-working, and resourceful when you initially lack information can be impressive to employers.

Maryland One Stop Counselors Get BRAC-Ready

Maryland One Stop Counselors Get BRAC-ReadyMaryland One Stop Counselors Get BRAC-ReadyMaryland One Stop Counselors Get BRAC-ReadyForty One Stop employment counselors from Maryland and DC have just been trained on the ins and outs of the federal job search. Marylands Department of Labor, wanted One Stop clients to have strong support when applying for 20,000 BRAC-related federal jobs flowing into his state. Kathryn Troutman, the federal jobs expert leading the training team. The state of Maryland has been getting ready. Due to Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decisions made in 2005, Maryland expects to receive about 20,000 direct federal jobs. Huge reorganizations of military bases and DOD agencies have slated thousands of additional jobs for the US Armys Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Fort Meade. The states Department of Labor, wanted to improve the success of federal job seekers moving through his One Stop employment centers. Now Md. State and DC employment counselors have receive d intensive training in the federal job search.Applying to work for the federal government is different than in the private sector and much more mysterious for most people, noted Kathryn Troutman, who is leading the Federal Career Training Institute team doing the training.Applying for federal jobs has always been complicated. Back in 2002, Troutman recognized the need for special in-depth certifications in federal job training and coaching coincidentally while doing a one-day training with job counselors in Maryland. The counselors told her they were intimidated by the federal hiring process and tended to avoid it. This conversation a decade ago inspired Troutman to establish her dual track Certified Federal Job Search Trainer and Federal Career Coach Certifications. The specifics of federal job counseling for veterans are part of the certifications and Maryland training. With the drawbacks in Iraq and Afghanistan, One Stop counselors need to be especially prepared to help e x-military with federal employment. Since federal job titles are different, counselors need to be trained on how to match past experience with the right positions. In all, 35 One Stop employment counselors from Maryland and five from DC completed the major portion of the federal jobs training earlier this year. This means that there is now one Federal Career Navigator for each One Stop office in the state of Maryland. The 2-1/2 day training welches done in two groups of 20. The One Stop counselors will all also attend a one-day follow-up session to address any challenges and remaining questions.Three Federal Career Training Institute trainers lead the two groups through a comprehensive back-grounding in federal employmentDay 1 Troutmans 10 Steps to a Federal Job approach to applying for federal jobsDay 2 A federal HR primer, including special populations hiring programs (veterans, military spouses, the disabled, etc.)Day 3 Coaching Practice, including assessment of job applicant skil ls, figuring out what the jobseekers objectives are, determining the skills called for in a job announcement, and counseling on improving the resume and writing it toward a particular position.Incorporated within the training was also coverage of Troutmans outline resume-writing technique, a format which has been well received by federal HR. A major problem with the earlier job campaigns in Maryland was certainly the resumes, Troutman explained. Federal resumes require a special format, which is three to four pages on average. Accomplishments need to be emphasized, rather than past duties. Keywords are important. A general resume wont do. She said that, for veterans, writing the federal resume can be especially challenging since many have never had to write one before.Troutmans federal job certifications are turnkey programs, which means everything is supplied. The Maryland students received six books, including The Federal Resume Guidebook, 5th edition and books geared toward veter ans, students and senior executives. They also were given a Powerpoint of Ten Steps training that can be presented to jobseekers. The very hands-on course was taught at the computer. The certification lasts for two years.Troutman sees the training of One Stop counselors in Maryland as a model for One Stop centers in other states, especially areas with a high concentration of federal jobs or BRAC opportunities. The training demystifies the federal application process, said Troutman. After the three days, the counselors feel confidant that they understand the federal system, and can advise applicants on federal jobs that best match their skill set. Its so important that federal resumes be targeted toward a specific federal job, and we emphasize this throughout the entire three days. Now in their tenth year, Troutmans Federal Job Search Trainer and Federal Career Coach certifications are the first and only certification programs on the federal job search. The programs are pre-approved t o fulfill 24 continuing education hours for the Center of Credentialing and Educations Global Career Development Facilitator certification. Four Ways to Help Your Boss Be Better

Four Ways to Help Your Boss Be Better Rare is the worker who has never had a badeanstalt anfhrer. Almost everyone has encountered at least one in their career, and pop culture abounds with examples, from the affably incompetent (Dunder Mifflins Michael Scott) to the downright tyrannical (Miranda Priestly ofThe Devil Wears Prada). Rare, too, is the boss who has never made a mistake the boss who, for all intents and purposes, is not a bad person per se not even necessarily a bad boss overall but who, nevertheless, makes their employees lives difficult through some poor management practices. Maybe they micromanage a little too much. Maybe they dont payenoughto attention to what employees are doing. There are tons of little ways for bosses to accidentally become the thorns in their employees sides.Today, I want to talk about these bosses the bosses who are goofing in some way. Specifically, I want to talk about what employees can do when their bosses are blowing it. Below, I have four tips for improving life under a bumbling manager.(Note Im not talking about abusive, terrible bosses. At a certain point, a bad manager becomes irredeemable, and you just have to leave. Instead, were talking about bosses who can be redeemed through careful employee action.)1. Make Sure Your Boss Knows Exactly What You DoMany bosses especially those with higher numbers of direct reports dont exactly know what their employees do on a daily basis. They may have hired you, they may be in charge of overlandseeing you, but they have a lot on their own plates, and they cant always find time to keep up with what youre working on. Unfortunately, this can lead to some bosses misunderstanding just how much work their employees do. They can see slackers where there are none.Take, for example, a job like mine I write an article every day for Recruiter.com. To some, this seems easy crank out 1000 or so wor ds a day? That shouldnt take eight hours You should do moraAnd yet the majority of my day is spent conducting research, reaching out to sources, holding and transcribing interviews, and otherwise generally keeping my writing well informed. To the untrained eye, it could seem like I am a slacker eight hours in the office, and nothing to show for it but one articleSome bosses, unaware of how much intangible work goes into producing certain tangible results, may come down hard on employees without realizing that these employees are meeting or exceeding reasonable expectations. My boss, for instance, could demand I write three or four articles a day. Sure, in terms of sheer word counts, I could pull that off, but if my boss wants the articles to be strong, well-written, insightful, and engaging, then hell want to give me the time it takes to write a really good article (which, thankfully, he does). If you find yourself facing a boss who doesnt quite seem to understand what you accomplis h during your time in the office, then I suggest this tactic that I learned about from Reddit nutzer Zelaphas. To quote the user Every Friday, send an email to your boss, BCC your personal email, with the followingWhat you accomplished this weekWhat youre struggling with or need advice onWhat you aim to accomplish next weekSend this Friday morning so if necessary your boss has time to discuss. Then Monday morning, stop your boss in the hall and ask if he has any comments or questions on your summary email. If so, be sure to send out a revised one right away for documentation and records.Do this for any job you have. Your boss will grow to love you and think of you as hard working and organized. Even if he never reads the emails or you dont always get everything on your to do list done, youll have documentation on your side and the sense of getting things done.Any other ways of documenting your work, the better. Communication is key, so if your boss thinks you arent working, maybe it s less about the amount of things done and more about the kind or order of things done.If you regularly keep your boss updated on your workflow and achievements, then your boss will have a better understanding of what goes into doing your job properly. Theyll see how much time and effort your projects require, and theyll be able to adjust their expectations accordingly.2. Make Sure Everyone Else Knows What Youre Doing, TooChances are, you dont work in a vacuum. Even if youre the only person in your department, you likely have colleagues around you during the workday. Share your work with these people. Dont think of it as an act of vanity and dont pursue it as one, either. Rather, share your work with your colleagues because you want to make sure the office knows what the company is up to at all times. You dont have to be a flashy braggart have simple conversations with your coworkers about what youre up to, and invite them to share as well. Solicit one another for feedback. Build a whole network within the office, connecting each member of the organization to one another by sharing experiences, plans, achievements, results, and ideas.Doing this can create an open network between the members of your organization, facilitating a freer, more productive flow of ideas, which can lead to better results. Ultimately, your boss will become a part of these network, too. Once your boss is tapped in, theyll have a better handle on how the company runs, and they can adjust their behaviors and managing styles accordingly. For more on this idea, see John Steppers posts about working out loud.3. Remember Your Boss is a PersonPeople are imperfect. We make mistakes all the time. Your boss is the same way imperfect, complicated, messy, full of their own personal baggage. But what does this have to do with you as an employee? To answer that question, Ill point you to the work of Martha Austin, who has some interesting insights into how we can acknowledge our bosses humanity and use this knowledge to better the workplace. I wont rehash what Austin says, because I think she says it better than I could. Instead, Ill simply urge you to read the linked article.4. Above All Stay ProfessionalYes, your boss is a person. Yes, there are ways you can help your boss be better. But remember this in the office hierarchy, your boss is still your boss. They oversee you. You report to them. You two have a professional relationship, so be professional about it.Dont try to get too personal with the boss (unless youre in a company with that kind of culture). Dont try to get one over on your boss. Dont try to destroy the office hierarchy. Do your job, do it well, and simply try to demonstrate this to your boss. This is exactly why something like Steppers working out loud is such a good idea it creates networks between people without stepping on the toes of someone who could make or break your career.Theres plenty you can do to help your boss be better, but that doesnt change the fact that your boss oversees you. It isnt the other way around.

Survey Americans welcome our new robot overlords

Survey Americans welcome our new robot overlordsSurvey Americans welcome our new robot overlordsA new survey of consumer attitudes toward automation has found that Americans are ready to accept robot workers in growing a number of roles. And yet, at the same time, they remain complacent about the threat artificial intelligence poses to their own jobs. The survey, commissioned by customer service firm LivePerson, asked 2,000 American consumers a series of questions about robots and artificial intelligence. Among the jobs that at least 1-in-5 people said they would trust a robot or AI to perform wereCashier (55%)Factory worker (52%)Customer service representative (28%)Taxi driver (22%)Mechanic (22%)and Accountant (20%)Smaller - but not insubstantial - numbers were ready to accept robot pilots, truck drivers, and teachers. This theoretical trust in robot workers may be an outgrowth of consumers daily interactions with intelligent machines. Some 85% of respondents reported interacting wi th ATMs, 67% with voice recognition assistants such as Siri or Alexa, 40% with customer service chatbots, and 7% with self-driving cars.Despite their growing comfort with robots, however, fruchtwein Americans are confident that they themselves wont be replaced anytime soon. Some 66% of people said they agree or strongly agree that, while many other industries are at risk of losing jobs to automation, their own industry is secure.Only 15% of respondents were certain - or constantly worried - they their industry would disappear due to automation. Generally, those with professional degrees were the least worried about the threat of automation, while those with minimal education were the most worried. The top jobs consumers believe susceptible to automation in the next 20 years are manufacturing (68%), followed by banking, accounting, and financial services (52%), and customer service (52%). As for specific jobs, consumers expect factory workers and cashiers to be mostly robots in 20 y ears.Underestimating the automation threat? This view of automation as a contained threat would seem at odds with various expert predictions in recent years.Research out of Oxford University has found that some 47% of American jobs are highly susceptible to automation. A White House report put out in December 2016 predicts that 3 million drivers - truck drivers and drivers for on-demand services like Uber - will be put out of work soon. A McKinsey Company report released in January, meanwhile, concluded that 60% of all occupations have at least 30% technically automatable activities. On the plus side, McKinsey estimates that automation could raise productivity growth on a global basis by as much as 0.8 to 1.4 percent annually.Bill Gates suggested last month that robots should be taxed if they put humans out of work.

How to Use the Holiday Season to Job Search

How to Use the Holiday Season to Job SearchHow to Use the Holiday Season to Job SearchAre you about to abflug a job search or are you in the midst of looking for a new job? If you are considering waiting to start your job or putting it on hold because of the holidays, think again. Contrary to popular opinion, the holidays are agood time of year to find a job. Employers dont stop hiring just because its the holiday season. Vacation time might mean that your interviews will be spread out over more time, but companies will still review applications and schedule those interviews. In addition, the holiday season is a perfect time of year to network your way to a new job. Hiring is a Year-Round Process Executive Dave Harshbarger explains why hiring continues, regardless of the time of year. For many of us, the holiday season is a time to sit back and relax, to take a break from business, to focus our attention on friends and family. For businesses, the needs that drive hiring throughout the year dont change just because the paid holidays are bunched up on the last pages of the calendar. He explains that at many companies hiring and personnel activities continue at all times of the year, because the needs that drive hiring - competitive pressures, growing markets, strategic initiatives - dont take a break. And, sometimes companies have an annual budget and headcount thats timed to the calendar year. In this case, managers may be quite eager to conclude hiring by the start of the next year, since the budget may not roll over. Hiring Continues During the Holiday Season Harshbarger adds, Hiring during the holidays is sometimes complicated because key decision makers are absent. In the case of hiring, arguably the most important decision companies make, it is common for key individuals to interrupt their vacations (where feasible) to meet with shortlisted candidates. In all cases, we understand that to meet our goals in the New Year, it is critical that we stay foc used on our staffing plans even as we turn our gaze homeward. If you do land interviews during the holiday season, its possible that they will occur over video chat or phone calls to accommodate vacationers schedules. Tips for a Successful Holiday Job Search As you can see, employers continue to focus on hiring, even though there is a temptation to do otherwise. The same should hold true for job seekers. It can be easier to say Im not going to bother, its a bad time of year for job hunting. than it is to move forward with a job search. However, for those who do keep plugging away, the additional opportunities are worth the effort. Dont Slow Down Your Job Search Some people give up job searching between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. Dont be one of them. Employers are still hiring and there may be less competition, from other job seekers this time of year. In addition, companies that budget on an annual fundament may have jobs that they need to hire for now. Use Down Time to You r Advantage If youre working at a company where the holiday season is a slow one, take advantage. If you have vacation time you need to use up, schedule some networking meetings. Its an ideal time of year to connect with acquaintances you havent been in touch with in a while, both to celebrate the holiday season and to let them know youre in the market for a job. If you have extra time, you can also use it to update your resume, refresh your LinkedIn profile, or create a portfolio. Use Personal and Professional Events for Networking If you are attending a holiday social event, it is definitely appropriate to mention that you are job searching. Accept all the invitations you receive, both personal and professional. You never know who may be able to help. Friends and family, as well as business acquaintances, are typically more than happy to assist. Note that holiday-themed volunteer events are another opportunity to expand your network by meeting more people, and to share that youre job searching. Send Holiday Cards Sending a Happy Holidays or a Happy New Year greeting card to networking contacts, recruiters, and to employers you have interviewed with is another good way to connect with those who can help with your job search. Connect Online Send anemail or use aprofessional or social networking site(like LinkedIn or Facebook) to get in touch. The holiday season is a good excuse to touch base and a good time to reinforce or expand your network. Relax and Enjoy During this time of year, its also wise to take some time for yourself and your family. Relax a little and dont forget to enjoy the holiday season. Youll enjoy both your job search and the holidays more, and thats important for everyone, whether job seeking or not.

Fourteen signs that you are emotionally intelligent

Fourteen signs that you are emotionally intelligent Fourteen signs that you are emotionally intelligent When emotional intelligence (EQ) first appeared to the masses, it served as the missing link in a peculiar finding: people with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70% of the time. This anomaly threw a massive wrench into the broadly held assumption that IQ was the sole source of success.Decades of research now point to emotional intelligence as being the critical factor that sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack. The connection is so strong that 90% of top performers have high emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions to achieve positive results.Despite the significance of EQ, its intangible nature makes it very difficult to know how much you have and what you can do to improve if you’re lacking. You can always take a scientifically validated test, such as the one that comes with the  Emotional Intelligence 2.0  book.Unfortunately, quality (scientifically valid) EQ tests aren’t free. So, I’ve analyzed the data from the million-plus people TalentSmart has tested in order to identify the behaviors that are the hallmarks of a high EQ. What follows are sure signs that you have a high EQ.You have a robust emotional vocabularyAll people experience emotions, but it is a select few who can accurately identify them as they occur. Our research shows that only 36% of people can do this, which is problematic because unlabeled emotions often go misunderstood, which leads to irrational choices and counterproductive actions.People with high EQs master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can pinpoint whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” “downtrodden,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.You’re curious about p[eopleIt doesn’t matter if they’re introverted or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them. This curiosity is the product of empathy, one of the most significant gateways to a high EQ. The more you care about other people and what they’re going through, the more curiosity you’re going to have about them. You know your strengths and weaknessesEmotionally intelligent people don’t just understand emotions; they know what they’re good at and what they’re terrible at. They also know who pushes their buttons and the environments (both situations and people) that enable them to succeed. Having a high EQ means you know your strengths and you know how to lean into them and use them to your full advantage while keeping your weaknesses from holding you back. You’re a good judge of characterMuch of emotional intelligence comes down to social awareness; the ability to read other people, know what they’re about, and understand what they’re going through. Over time, this skill makes you an exceptional judge of character. People are no mystery to you. You know what they’re all about and understand their motivations, even those that lie hidden beneath the surface. You are difficult to offendIf you have a firm grasp of whom you are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that gets your goat. Emotionally intelligent people are self-confident and open-minded, which creates a pretty thick skin. You may even poke fun at yourself or let other people make jokes about you because you are able to mentally draw the line between humor and degradation. You let go of mistakesEmotionally intelligent people distance themselves from their mistakes, but do so without forgetting them. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still handy enough to refer to, they are able to adapt and adjust for future success. It takes refined self-awareness to walk this tightrope between dwelling and remembering. Dwelling too long on your mistakes makes you anxious and gun shy, while forgetting about them completely makes you bound to repeat them. The key to balance lies in your ability to transform failures into nuggets of improvement. This creates the tendency to get right back up every time you fall down. You don’t hold grudgesThe negative emotions that come with holding onto a grudge are actually a stress response. Just thinking about the event sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat. When the threat is imminent, this reaction is essential to your survival, but when the threat is ancient history, holding onto that stress wreaks havoc on your body and can have devastating health consequences over time. In fact, researchers at Emory University have shown that holding onto stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease. Holding onto a grudge means you’re holding onto stress, and emotionally intelligent people know to avoid this at all costs. Letting go of a grudge not only makes you feel better now but can also improve your health. You neutralize toxic peopleDealing with difficult people is frustrating and exhausting for most. High EQ individuals control their interactions with toxic people by keeping their feelings in check. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. They identify their own emotions and don’t allow anger or frustration to fuel the chaos. They also consider the difficult person’s standpoint and are able to find solutions and common ground. Even when things completely derail, emotionally intelligent people are able to take the toxic person with a grain of salt to avoid letting him or her bring them down. You don’t seek perfectionEmotionally intelligent people wonâ €™t set perfection as their target because they know that it doesn’t exist. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure that makes you want to give up or reduce your effort. You end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish and what you should have done differently instead of moving forward, excited about what you’ve achieved and what you will accomplish in the future. You disconnectTaking regular time off the grid is a sign of a high EQ because it helps you to keep your stress under control and to live in the moment. When you make yourself available to your work 24/7, you expose yourself to a constant barrage of stressors. Forcing yourself offline and even- gulp!- turning off your phone gives your body and mind a break. Studies have shown that something as simple as an e-mail break can lower stress levels. Technology enables constant communication and the expectation that y ou should be available 24/7. It is extremely difficult to enjoy a stress-free moment outside of work when an e-mail that will change your train of thought and get you thinking (read: stressing) about work can drop onto your phone at any moment. You limit your caffeine intakeDrinking excessive amounts of caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, and adrenaline is the source of the fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response to ensure survival. This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when you’re responding to a curt e-mail. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyper-aroused state of stress, your emotions overrun your behavior. Caffeine’s long half-life ensures you stay this way as it takes its sweet time working its way out of your body. High-EQ individuals know that caffeine is trouble, and they don’t let it get the better of them. You get enough sleepIt’s difficult to overst ate the importance of sleep to increasing your emotional intelligence and managing your stress levels. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, shuffling through the day’s memories and storing or discarding them (which causes dreams) so that you wake up alert and clearheaded. High-EQ individuals know that their self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when they don’t get enough- or the right kind- of sleep. So, they make sleep a top priority. You stop negative self-talk in its tracksThe more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that- thoughts, not facts. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook. You won’t let  anyone   limit your joyWhen your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from the opinions of other people, you are no longer the master of your own happiness. When emotionally intelligent people feel good about something that they’ve done, they won’t let anyone’s opinions or snide remarks take that away from them. While it’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you don’t have to compare yourself to others, and you can always take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within.Bringing it all togetherUnlike your IQ, your EQ is highly malleable. As you train your brain by repeatedly practicing new emotionally intelligent behaviors, it builds the pathways needed to make them into habits. As your brain reinforces the use of these new behaviors, the connections supporting old, destructive behaviors die off. Before long, you begin responding to your surroundings with emotional intelligence without even having to think about it.This article first appeared on LinkedIn. 6 ways to identify and break free from manipulative coworkers

6 ways to identify and break free from manipulative coworkers 6 ways to identify and break free from manipulative coworkers It may be difficult to unmask a sneaky coworker who has selfish motives. We’ve asked work experts for cues on what to look for and how to navigate through the treachery to keep your work life more productive. Here are some of the ways it happens and how you can break free of the patterns. They aren’t giving you the whole pictureIf the sneaky coworker is giving only one side of the story, there’s more you need to know. “It’s very common for workers to tell only their side of the story - whether it’s to bosses or coworkers,” says David Bennett, a Columbus, Ohio-based counselor, life coach, and coauthor of seven self-help books. Along with his brother, they own Theta Hill Consulting.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.“That person - always complaining about another person, or even evaluating coworkers - may not be telling you everything. Often, the person who tells h is or her story first is considered the most credible” Bennett stresses it’s important to remember that there are always multiple sides to every story, and consulting all sides before making decisions is crucial. They are fixated on someoneThe concept of ‘targeting” as Bennett explains is when particularly controlling workers get in their head that someone should be fired. “After this gets in their heads, they will do whatever they can to get this person fired,” Bennett says. “Often, that person is also excluded from work social groups, and given unfair evaluations.”If you feel like you are being targeted, Bennett advises it’s important to assert yourself to whoever is in charge and outside the influence of the person doing the targeting: “Everyone who I know who has been ‘targeted’ has eventually either quit or been fired, so if you feel this is happening, it’s important to assertively fight for your rights.”They attempt  to distract youCoworkers who aren ’t pulling their weight, or understand they have done something that’s not right, often resort to this behavior, Bennett says. He says common antics include starting conversations related to things they know you enjoy,  like your hobbies, to distract you from their poor performance.“While sometimes this is just conversation, I have dealt with many coworkers who would always come to the bosses on Tuesday - after they missed five Mondays in a row - to discuss football because they knew it would get the boss’ mind off of their absenteeism,” Bennett adds. You get a bump in responsibility without compensationGiving you more importance - without increasing your pay, is a tool for managers to get more work from their employees without providing more compensation, Bennett believes. “By giving you important titles like ‘you’re now our ‘lead marketer.’ they are motivating you to feel like you have to give more of your time and energy. However, with more work and importan ce should also come more pay - or at least perks. So, be aware of this.”They try to bring down your moraleLaura MacLeod, LMSW, a New York-based HR Expert, consultant, and therapist, says when a coworker is complaining excessively, that could be a sign they want to sabotage your success. She recommends an immediate dismissal of their complaining.“Interrupt with a smile and say, ‘So sorry, Jane. I really can’t talk now. I’m in the middle of an important work task.’ Then move back to your work area and get to work,” MacLeod says. They are a gossip millIf coworker talks about others and begins to stir the pot of personalities and politics, MacLeod advises to immediately make an excuse and get away. Tell the trouble-maker that you need to make a call, that you need to get a report out, or you have to call a family member about a pressing matter.“If you are there, whether contributing or not - you’ll get tangled up in the mess,” she adds. “Get away fast. The sneaky coworker feeds off people who are willing to take it and don’t know how to get away.”Once you set up this pattern - that you’re not available, the manipulating coworker will look for someone else to fit the bill, MacLeod says.

The 3-step strategy that helped nearly 100 millionaires get rich

The 3-step strategy that helped nearly 100 millionaires get rich The 3-step strategy that helped nearly 100 millionaires get rich Sometimes, simplicity is key. That’s particularly the case when it comes to building wealth, according to John, who runs the personal-finance blog ESI Money and retired early at the age of 52 with a $3 million net worth.John, who doesn’t share his last name online, interviewed 100 millionaires over the past few years and found that nearly all of them built their wealth in three simple steps, or what he calls “the old-fashioned way.”“They earned a lot, saved a ton, and invested for a long time,” he wrote. This is in contrast to the common belief that most millionaires inherit their wealth or got lucky with big risks, he said, though one or two of his interviewees did get rich that way.The median net worth of millionaires John interviewed was $2.3 million. While 90% of them were men, 93% were married, so John said he considered the women millionaires as well. The median age of the people he surveyed was just under 50.One of the millionaires told John that he and his wife foc used on their careers, made good decisions, saved, and had “good fortune with our investments,” particularly through his 401(k).“We started with literally nothing at ages 27 and 25, and never really made big salaries (although if someone had told me when I started out that I’d be making six figures someday, I would have told them they were crazy),” the millionaire told John. “We had some luck selling homes at the right time and made a few dollars as we were forced to move a couple times. But there was certainly nothing strategic about the timing.”He added: “In all honesty the biggest moment in our financial life came when an older coworker literally walked me up to HR back in 1992 and made me sign up for this thing called a 401(k). If he hadn’t been so forceful and insistent, I might not even be answering this interview as a millionaire.”John said this kind of behavior was characteristic for most of the millionaires he interviewed. “They make solid money moves over time and ultimately become wealthy,” he wrote. The simple - and long-lasting - habits are the most importantWilliam D. Danko, the coauthor of the best-seller “The Millionaire Next Door,” is also a huge proponent of saving and maximizing income to build wealth - no matter your financial situation or education. In a recent QA with The Washington Post, Danko emphasized the importance of saving 20% of your income.“If you earn and spend everything, you cannot build a significant financial net worth,” he said. “You must practice self-imposed financial scarcity. So, if you make $100,000, create a lifestyle that only requires 80% of this, and save/invest the rest.”Committing to saving your income is part of setting financial goals. It’s at the heart of building any wealth, Business Insider previously reported. That 20% should be put toward an emergency fund, retirement, and paying down debt.Danko also advised having more than one income stream to maximize your savings and investments, which will earn compound interest the earlier you start investing and the longer you live.In fact, investing is yet another way millionaires favor simplicity; John also found that they use a simple investing strategy by investing in low-cost index funds - the same investment strategy championed by the billionaire investor Warren Buffett.“Becoming wealthy is simple - create a gap between earning and spending for many years,” John wrote. “A huge inheritance or hot stock tip is not required.”This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Learn How to Pitch to the CEO of a Company

Learn How to Pitch to the CEO of a Company Learn How to Pitch to the CEO of a Company Many salespeople dream of selling their product straight to the top of the food chain. Selling to the CEO helps you to cut through all the red tape that normally goes along with selling to a medium or large company, and you dont have to worry about being overruled by his boss! Impressing a C-suite decision maker requires a little extra work on your part. Research Once you get the appointment, your first step is to start doing research. CEOs will expect you to know the basics about their company and themselves. Fortunately, most of the information you need will be easily available on the Internet. Look for details like the companys size (e.g. annual revenue), how long its been in business, whether its publicly or privately owned, what products or services it offers, and what industry its in. Dig a little deeper to uncover details about the nature of the competition, whether the company has had recent successes or failures, any new legislation that might affect it, and what the companys biggest challenges are likely to be. Dont forget to look at the CEOs background as well- at a minimum, you should know how long hes been in his current position, where he held his previous position, and who he replaced (and why). If you can, also look for details on his style of doing business and for the approaches he advocates for the company. The details you dig up in your research will help you in two ways. First, you can mention important  bits and pieces during your meeting and thus show the CEO that youve done your homework. Second, some of this background information can be extremely helpful in tuning your pitch. For example, if you discover that your prospect company recently hired the current CEO because the company has fallen behind in market share, thats a pretty powerful motivator that you can tie into your presentation. The Meeting An effective sales meeting with a CEO or other C-suite member has four specific parts: Introduce yourself, mentioning any sponsors who helped you get this meeting. Then state your goal for the meeting and get the CEOs buy-in on it. The goal you choose should express a benefit for both yourself and your prospect. For example, your goal might be to strategize with your prospect on ways that your company can help his comply with recent legislation. The whole introduction should be brief, taking up perhaps 10 minutes of an hour-long meeting. Its time to start asking some smart questions. This is your chance to show off your newly-acquired knowledge of the prospects company and to dig for deeper insights. Some salespeople are afraid to ask C-suite prospects a lot of questions because they think theyll come off as ignorant, but if youve taken the time to learn the basic details youre more likely to impress the CEO with your willingness to learn more. Ask open-ended questions and take notes on the answers. Plan on taking roughly half the meeting just to ask questions and gathe r information. Bring out your sales pitch. Keep your focus on solutions rather than products; the goal here is to show that youre taking the information the CEO just gave you regarding his needs and using it to work with him on possible fixes. Ideally, you should express your solutions in terms of how they will help both the company as a whole and the CEO personally. Keep your pitch brief (10 to 15 minutes for an hour-long meeting) by trimming out all the slides about your company and your products. The focus should remain on the prospect, not on you.? Wrap up the meeting by determining the next steps. In the best case, the next step would be starting the purchase process. If your prospect isnt ready to make the leap, then get his approval on what you will do next. For example, you might set a date for a follow-up meeting to which you will bring an expert from your company who can further explore possible solutions.

5 ways to find career compatibility with your life partner

5 ways to find career compatibility with your life partner 5 ways to find career compatibility with your life partner In 2019, more men and women are entering the workforce than before, pushing many of society’s antiquated norms. Just a few decades ago, men were often the only ones to venture into the workforce, leaving women to tend growing families and other household responsibilities. Now that many couples are pursuing simultaneous careers, the dynamics of their relationship have begun to shift in a major way. There are many ways that two individual career paths can affect and ultimately harm a relationship if issues are not identified head-on. If you find yourself recently exhausted with both your career and your relationship, here’s how you can balance the scales.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Discuss the expected “division of labor” in the home. It’s easy to slip into society’s pre-set roles where somehow the woman feels responsible for cleaning the house and making dinner , even after working her own shift in the field. In order to avoid the frustration that the infamous “second shift” can bring, sit down with your partner and have an honest conversation about what needs to be expected of both of you. By setting expectations, it will be easier to know what you need to accomplish at the end of the day and will ward off those exhausting fights that pop up when you’re both hungry!Invest in one another’s goals and dreams in the workplaceWhile you’re each on a different path in your careers, it’s important to take time to support the other’s career and interests as often as possible. This could include going to a networking event with them that may be outside of your comfort zone, or giving them an online class that touches on something they’ve said they want to get better at. By just showing your partner that you support their career- and vice versa- your relationship will naturally grow stronger.Use one another as a sounding board for ca reer adviceNot too long ago, my significant other and I sat down with a glass of wine and discussed my upcoming performance review. I was going to ask for a title and pay increase, and I was so nervous. After going through scenarios and explaining lessons we’ve each learned in the past, I felt much more confident about my meeting. While it doesn’t always need to be a sit-down discussion, asking one another’s opinions about issues that are coming up at work really helps to draw a team mentality that is very healthy for your relationship.Find ways to include your partner at work when they physically can’t be presentThere’s nothing I find shadier than not knowing when a coworker I am close with has a significant other that they never discuss. It’s important to introduce your partner to your coworkers, even before they can physically meet. By sharing tidbits of your life outside of work, you are not only solidifying your relationship with your coworkers, but also making sure that your partner feels welcome when they come to your work functions.Schedule time to invest in your relationship without work distractionsWhether or not you have conflicting schedules, make a point to set aside time where the two of you are able to reconnect without the distractions of a work phone or even “shop talk.” Spend these moments completely present with one another. Use this opportunity to bring up things that may need to be fixed in the relationship, or discuss ways you appreciate one another’s efforts during especially hectic times. These designated dates will be the crucial part to being 100% on board with your partner’s career while still feeling as though they are also putting the effort into your relationship.Implementing even just one of these ideas on a regular basis can begin to reshape not only your individual relationship and career, but also push against what was once the “status-quo.” As the years roll by, generational change is inevitable- and s o are the tactics we need to employ against having to choose between our love lives and a fulfilling career. This article originally appeared on Create and Cultivate.Samantha Rosenfeld spends 40-some hours a week working to promote the study of surface science as the head of North American Marketing for a German-based manufacturing company.
